ACCESS STATEMENT

Introduction

The Wharncliffe is a Victorian building situated overlooking North Bay with spectacular sea views. The guest accommodation is arranged over five floors; as we do not have a lift we realise that this may make our accommodation difficult to access for people who have limited mobility. There are eight double en-suite rooms on the three upper floors. There are no bedrooms at ground floor level. Although not all the guest bedrooms have a sea view our standards and our commitment to the comfort, convenience and enjoyment of our visitors’ stay is of paramount importance to us.

We offer the assurance of VisitEngland Quality in Tourism inspected and four star rated guest accommodation together with the VisitEngland Welcome to Excellence award.

Before Arrival

Although we do not have a 24 hour reception, The Wharncliffe is our home and therefore we are available to respond to most communications received during the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. GMT/BST

The centre of the town is a 10 minute walk, or 3 minute drive away.

The railway station is in town, taxis are usually available at the station.

A bus from the railway station (opposite side of the road) to Castle Road is available.

All buses are accessible. There is a 3 minute walk on a slight incline from the bus stop in Castle Road to The Wharncliffe.

The Wharncliffe accommodation is exclusively for adults, primarily couples and small groups, definitely not stag parties or hen nights.

The accommodation is arranged over five floors, as we do not have a lift we realise that this may make our accommodation less accessible for people with limited mobility. Please mention at time of booking if you anticipate difficulty with the stairs and need a first floor room.

We do not ourselves keep any pets in The Wharncliffe Guest Accommodation.

We unable to accommodate visitors’ pets, due to asthma.

Medicines can be refrigerated if necessary.

Car Parking Facilities

All parking is on street permit parking. The appropriate parking permit for your stay will be provided by us when you check in, at no additional charge. However, we reserve the right to charge for replacement permits.

Cars may be parked in any space within the A2 zone. A2 is a large zone and includes all of Blenheim Terrace, Rutland Terrace, and the adjacent side streets. Zone A2 is clearly marked on the kerbside parking signs. Parking is permitted on both sides of Blenheim Terrace. There is a two space disabled public parking bay just across the road from The Wharncliffe. Additional parking permits are not required for Blue Badge holders providing a valid Blue Badge is displayed.

Arrival

Parking permits may be collected at whatever time you arrive in Scarborough. Please let us know if you plan to arrive before 9.30 a.m. or after 9.30 p.m. (Before 9.30 a.m. we are busy with breakfast, after 9.30 p.m. we worry)

Rooms are always available by 3.30 p.m. if you arrive earlier and your room is available you may check in if you wish. Rooms are more likely to be available before 3.30 p.m. during low season/quiet periods.

Entrance

The front path is level concrete 165 cm wide and 2 m long. There are four steps to the entrance. The steps are 23 cm high, 28 cm deep, and 165 cm wide. There is a metal hand rail on either side of the steps. There are grab handles on the front of the building.

The entrance has a half glazed porch.

There is a threshold step 18 cm high, and 104 cm wide.

There is a glazed door 104 cm wide with a Yale type lock and a lever latch handle. This door is closed at night and during inclement weather. (Key will be supplied at check in, see check in)

Reception & Check In

The reception desk is immediately in front of you when you enter the building. The reception desk is 111 cm high.

Registration can be completed sitting in the reception area and there is a clipboard available.

At Check In

  • The layout of the building is explained to all guests.
  • A key for the guest bedroom, room window locks, and a key for the front doors are issued to each couple. The key for the front door fits the lock on both doors so all guests may come and go without hindrance or restriction.
  • If you have a car to park; the appropriate parking permit for your stay will be provided by us, at no additional charge. (However, we do reserve the right to charge for replacement permits) We have a map to show the area covered by zone A2.
  • There is a bell on reception which can be used to contact us at any time during your stay.
  • Maps of Scarborough are available if required.

Carpet is fitted in the reception area.

There is a large notice board with details of some local forthcoming attractions and events.

There are several displays of visitor information.

To the left of reception are the stairs to all floors, one staircase goes up to the guest bedrooms, one staircase goes down to the spacious dining room.

Whilst facing the stairs, on the left is the sea view guest lounge, and on the right the licensed bar. There are no steps or slopes on route or at the entrance of the bar or guest lounge.

There is a notice board located down 5 steps 18 cm high, 25 cm deep, and 132 cm wide, with details of local of taxi firms. The Yellow pages is also available.

Wi Fi access is available in the bar and guest lounge. A password is required for connection.

Dining Room

Breakfast is served in the dining room. All chairs are without arms. Tables have underneath space of 69 cm. Each table has a number to correspond with the room number. Individual menus are on each table.

You may help yourself to items from the breakfast buffet; including juice, fruit, cereals, and yogurt. Milk, sugar, butter, bertolli, jam, and marmalade are on the table.

Your order will be taken for cooked breakfast, toast and hot beverages, these items will be served at your table.

We are willing to cater for special diets; prior notice and/or discussion would be appreciated.

From reception down the steps 5 steps 18 cm high, 25 cm deep, and 132 cm wide there is a handrail on both sides. Turn left walk down 6 steps 18 cm high, 25 cm deep, and 95 cm wide there is a hand rail on the right at the half landing turn right 5 steps 18 cm high, 25 cm deep, and 80 cm wide there is a hand rail at the right.

Stairs

Access to all bedrooms is by the staircase which has a fixed wooden banister rail on the right (ascending)

We do not have a lift.

The staircase is lit by natural light from a skylight; and supplemented by ceiling lights, lamps, spotlights, and wall lights. There is also emergency lighting.

There are four bedrooms on each of the upper floors.

The stairs between the ground and first floors are arranged in two short flights of 10 steps and 8 steps 17 cm high, 27 cm deep, and 100 cm wide connected by a large half landing. The stairs between the first and second floors are arranged in two short flights of 11 steps and 7 steps 17 cm high, 27 cm deep, and 100 cm wide connected by a large half landing. The stairs between the second and third floors are arranged in two short flights of 8 steps and 8 steps 17 cm high, 27 cm deep, and 100 cm wide connected by a large half landing.

Toilet

There is a guest toilet with small hand basin on the first floor.

Bedrooms

There are eight double en – suite bedrooms. Each en-suite has a toilet, basin and shower or bath with fixed flooring. All showers have shower trays and therefore a step into the shower: There are no level walk in showers.

All bed rooms are carpeted. All bed rooms have double glazing and central heating.

All bed rooms have over bed light(s) and/or bedside lamps, central lighting.

All bed rooms have colour flat screen television, remote control, DVD player, and Freeview.

A cordless kettle and beverage making facilities are provided.

Also provided are: a hairdryer, extra blanket, and sewing kit.

Our beds are made with duvets, although sheets and blankets can be made available. Freshly laundered bed linen and towels are used for every change of room occupancy.

There is a full length wall mirror, wardrobe, chest of drawers, and two seats in every room; some rooms have additional furniture, a further chest of drawers and/or dressing table.

There is a folder in each bedroom which contains further information about The Wharncliffe, an A2 zone parking map and a town centre map with cash points highlighted.

Bed rooms have Wi Fi access: a password is required for connection.

All en-suites have ceiling lighting, over the basin lighting, mirror, and shaver points.

Outside

There is a small outside area at the front of The Wharncliffe.

Additional Information

There is a maintained fire alarm system with fire bells, call points, and fire extinguishers on every landing. There are heat detectors in all rooms. Please advise us if you have a hearing impairment and may not hear the fire bells in the event of an emergency. The building should be evacuated through the front door. In an emergency, from the dining room, an alternative means of exit is through the kitchen and out of the back door.

Mobile phone reception is good. A shop mobility scheme operates in town.

There is an iron and ironing board for guest use located on the second floor landing.

We are open from mid February until December, but do take occasional days off.

It is against the law to smoke in The Wharncliffe.

We have always been, and will continue to be, committed to providing totally smoke free accommodation.
